The Flu Fighters are being called in to help protect Dorset’s children this winter!
In a collaboration between the NHS and schools across the county, a colourful storybook, Flu Fighters Versus Chilly, Achy and Snotty, is being distributed to thousands of children.
The book tells the story of three slimy alien invaders from the Planet Bogey who come to Earth “to spread disease and make the children of Dorset cough, splutter and sneeze”. Fortunately, their dastardly plans will be thwarted by our young heroes who become Flu Fighters after getting their flu vaccination.
For children and parents who might feel worried about the flu vaccination, the website has child-friendly videos and explanations about the ‘tickle up the nose’ vaccination.
The vaccination will be offered free of charge in schools to all primary and secondary aged pupils in Dorset from October and is given without the use of needles via a quick and painless nasal spray.
The flu vaccination is also available free for children aged two and three via their local general practice surgery.
For children who require a pork gelatine-free alternative, or who are unable to have the nasal spray for medical reasons, an injectable vaccination is available on request.
Paul Bolton, Clinical Services Manager for vaccinations at Dorset HealthCare said,
“The free flu vaccination helps protect children and reduces the chance of flu spreading to friends and family who might be vulnerable. With flu season rapidly approaching, it is vitally important that we all get vaccinated as soon as possible.
“Flu Fighters Versus Chilly, Achy and Snotty is a fantastically illustrated, exciting story which can be enjoyed by children of all ages, and we hope the exploits of our young heroes will encourage children and their families to get protected this winter.”
