More than 250,000 people in Dorset have now had their flu vaccination, as NHS teams continue to offer protection ahead of the busy winter period.
Local NHS leaders are encouraging anyone who can get a free flu vaccination to book theirs as soon as possible. Flu spreads more easily during festive gatherings and school holidays, and it takes around two weeks for the vaccination to give full protection.

Martin Sale, Lead Vaccination Pharmacist at NHS Dorset said,
"It's great to see so many people across Dorset come forward for their flu vaccination.
"It's a simple step that protects you and the people you care about. If you're eligible and haven't had it yet, now is the time. Getting protected before the holidays means you're less likely to miss out on the things that matter most."
Across the South West, more than one million flu vaccinations have already been given, and flu cases are rising earlier than usual. Dorset continues to run clinics in GP practices, pharmacies and community venues such as walk-in clinics, supermarkets and family hubs, making it easier for people to get protected at a time that suits them.
Thousands of appointments remain available across the region for those yet to come forward, and many sites are offering walk-ins to help people get their jab quickly.
With Christmas and New Year approaching, health teams are reminding people that flu can hit suddenly and cause serious illness, especially for older people, pregnant women, young children and those with long-term conditions.
The NHS is asking eligible people to act now so they are protected in time for family events, school concerts, festive meals and busy travel periods.
People eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination include:
- Adults aged 65 and over
- People with certain long-term conditions
- Pregnant women
- Children aged 2 and 3
- School-aged children from Reception to Year 11
- Unpaid carers
- Frontline health and social care staff

Martin added, "We want everyone to enjoy a safe and healthy winter. Taking up the flu vaccination now reduces the risk of becoming seriously unwell and helps protect your family, friends and community."
You can book your flu vaccination through your local pharmacy, GP practice or community clinic. Many walk-in sessions are also available.
