Little things blog post from Karina, who sea swims for wellbeing

I first started sea swimming in May 2021.

My friend Kim, said she had started doing it and how it was making her feel really good mentally and physically.

Prior to this, a few months back I was still suffering from long Covid, so I looked into the health benefits of cold-water swimming, and I thought I would give it a try. At the time I was also trying to conceive, so I needed something for my mental and physical well-being.

I began swimming once a week and then was told to build this up, so it became a twice a week hobby in the spring and summer evenings.

My friend told me that to carry on into the winter you must start in the Spring, so I was willing to give this a go.

It was so much fun meeting the girls, chatting and putting the worlds to rights, having a swim then a hot chocolate – perfect!

In the winter months we would make a warm fire and in the summer months a lovely BBQ.

We would swim according to the weather temperatures outside for example if it was 15 degrees we would spend 15 minutes in the water.

I made it till November, which was my coldest swim featured in these pics. I then discovered I was pregnant in the early days of December.

I still met up with my pals at Lulworth Cove for a December Christmas barbeque, but I looked after the fire whilst they swam and made my excuses for the swimming!

Due to family commitments since then I have only been sea swimming now and again, weather permitting on English holidays at home and further afield, but I plan to get back into the water and make it my hobby again at some point next year.

I miss the social connection and how the water makes you feel mentally and physically, during and after.

There is also something about the sound of the sea that has always made me feel relaxed and calm – it's escapism at its best, it's 'The Little Things'.

As a whole sea swimming enriched my mental health, metabolism, skin, mood and well-being – I better get back on it!

The Bluetit Chill Swimmers offer a free, welcoming community where people can enjoy the benefits of cold-water dipping in a safe and friendly environment.

Anyone can join in. You don’t need experience — just a willingness to turn up, take part and be supported by others. Many people say it helps them feel calm, connected and more confident.

The group meets across Dorset’s beaches and bays, bringing people together to enjoy the outdoors and look after their wellbeing.

Please remember: cold-water dipping is not suitable for everyone. Check local conditions and only take part if it is safe for you.
