With higher levels of illness expected over the coming weeks, NHS Dorset is asking local people to plan ahead and use the right service so care is available for those who need it most. This includes pharmacies, NHS 111, Minor Injury Units and Urgent Treatment Centres.

Dr Forbes Watson, local GP and Chair of the Dorset General Practice Alliance, said: "Winter is always a busy time in general practice, and simple steps can make a real difference. If you are able to use the online consultation forms to contact your GP practice for non urgent issues, this frees up the phone lines for people who are unable to.

"Save the 111 website to your phone so you can get quick advice if someone becomes unwell over the holidays. You can also call 111 for advice and to find the best care for your symptoms.

"Ordering your repeat prescriptions now and getting your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations if you're eligible will help you to stay well over this busy time of year.

"Finally, make sure your medicine cabinet is stocked with basic over the counter medicines in case of colds, earache, coughs and other minor illnesses that we commonly see in the winter."

Vaccinations

Flu levels are on the rise. National figures show flu cases in hospital are the highest on record for this time of year, with numbers more than ten times higher than the same week in 2023.

There are still plenty of options for people to have their flu vaccination including walk-in clinics running in the community. People can also visit their local pharmacy or contact their GP. Find out more here: Flu – Stay Well Dorset
