A group of GP surgeries in Weymouth and Portland have started a simple new way for people to help themselves and others stay healthy this winter.
The project is being shared ahead of the festive holidays as part of NHS Dorset’s Little Things campaign, which focuses on small actions that can make a big difference to health and wellbeing.
Healthcare Heroes invites local people to sign up for short, trusted tips about the best way to use GP surgery and NHS services. These tips are designed to be shared with friends, family, and neighbours, helping the whole community stay well.
People do not have to be living in Weymouth and Portland to get involved. “Signing up is a simple way to help others, such as the people you work with, your family, your friends, and yourself,” said Mark Winterburn, Digital and Transformation Lead at Weymouth and Portland Primary Care Network.

“The Christmas Edition shares simple tips to support people this winter. For example, suggesting to a friend that they use the NHS App for ordering repeat prescriptions. Our short, easy to read toolkits explain what people can do to get the right help at the right time this winter.”
Once a month, everyone who has signed up will get a short email full of clear, helpful advice about how to look after their health. Each message is easy to understand and easy to share. The aim is to help people feel more confident about using health services and supporting those around them.
Weymouth and Portland Primary Care Network brings together five local GP practices. Together, they want to help their community stay well, especially as winter holidays approach.
Each month, a new topic will be covered, such as how to book GP appointments online, how to order repeat prescriptions, and who to speak to when you need health advice. These messages are designed to answer common questions and help people make good choices for their health.
Dr Laura Godfrey, local GP & PCN Clinical Director said, “I’m really enthusiastic about ‘Healthcare Heroes’. This supports the vision for Weymouth & Portland PCN of a healthier more connected neighbourhood, helping engage and empower individuals living and working in Weymouth & Portland to spread vital messages about living healthier lives and living well for longer.”
It’s quick and easy to sign up at healthcare-heroes.org.
People can also get involved by telling friends, sharing the messages online, or helping spread the word in your school, workplace, or local community.
