As cases of Norovirus, commonly known as the “winter vomiting bug” continue to rise, clinicians in Dorset are issuing an urgent request to the public: please avoid visiting hospitals and other premises if you are experiencing symptoms.
Norovirus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in healthcare settings, putting vulnerable patients and healthcare workers at risk. Symptoms include sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain, often accompanied by a mild temperature or body aches.
By staying away from hospitals if you are symptomatic, you can help prevent outbreaks that may compromise patient safety and overwhelm health and care services.
If you have symptoms:
Stay at home: Rest, stay hydrated, and avoid contact with others until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped.
Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, as hand sanitisers are less effective against the virus. Clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant.
Avoid preparing food for others: To prevent spreading the virus through food.
If you have an appointment booked, please call to re-arrange if possible.
