Dorset is experiencing very hot weather. This can affect children, families and schools.

Schools and councils are taking steps to keep children safe.

Are schools closing?

  • Most schools are staying open during the heatwave.
  • Decisions about closing are made by individual headteachers.
  • Dorset Council and BCP Council are advising schools to stay open where it is safe to do so.
  • If a school does close, parents and carers will be told directly by the school.

For many children, school is the safest place to be, especially during extreme weather.

How schools are keeping children safe

Schools across Dorset are making changes to help children cope with the heat.

These include:

Clothing

  • Children may be allowed to wear lighter, looser clothes
  • Blazers and jumpers may be removed
  • Sun hats may be encouraged outdoors

Drinking water

  • Children are given regular access to drinking water
  • Schools encourage children to drink often, even if they don’t feel thirsty

Shade and outdoor time

  • Children are encouraged to use shaded areas
  • Time in direct sun is limited, especially between 11am and 3pm

Physical activity

  • Vigorous exercise and PE may be reduced or paused
  • Lessons may be adapted so children can stay calm and cool

Keeping buildings cool

  • Windows and doors may be opened early in the day
  • Curtains or blinds may be closed when the sun is strongest
  • Classrooms are ventilated where possible

Children who may need extra support

Some children are more affected by heat, including:

  • Very young children
  • Children with medical conditions
  • Children with additional needs

Schools are asked to check on these children more often and make sure they are comfortable.

What parents and carers can do

You can help by:

  • Sending children to school in light clothing
  • Providing a named water bottle
  • Applying sun cream before school if needed
  • Checking school messages for updates
