Fire safety outdoors
Spending time outside is great for your health and wellbeing. Parks, beaches, gardens and countryside spaces are there for everyone to enjoy.
When the weather is warm and dry, there is a higher risk of fires. Small actions can help keep people, wildlife and nature safe.
Be careful with fires
- Do not light fires or barbecues in parks, on beaches, or in the countryside unless signs say it is allowed.
- Never use disposable barbecues on grass, dry ground or picnic tables.
- Hot coals can stay hot for a long time and start fires later.
Put litter in the bin
Litter can start fires.
- Take your rubbish home if bins are full.
- Glass bottles can act like a magnifying glass in the sun and start fires.
- Do not leave bottles, cans or food waste behind.
Be smoke-free outside
- Do not throw cigarette ends on the ground.
- Make sure cigarettes are fully out before putting them in a bin.
- Never flick cigarette ends from cars or bikes.
Look after nature
Fires can harm animals, plants and homes.
- Stay on paths where you can.
- Keep dogs under control.
- Respect signs and local rules.
If you see a fire
- Get to a safe place.
- Call 999 and ask for the fire service.
- Tell them where you are and what you can see.
Look out for each other
- Remind friends and family about fire safety.
- Help children understand why fires can be dangerous.
- Small choices can make a big difference.
Spending time outdoors should be fun and safe. By being careful with fire, litter and smoking, we can all help protect Dorset’s beautiful outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.
