The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the South West, including Dorset.
Thunderstorms may develop quickly, bringing heavy rain, lightning, hail and strong winds (up to 50–60mph). This could lead to difficult driving conditions, flooding, travel disruption and short power cuts. A red heat health alert also remains in place until Friday evening, increasing health risks and drawing more people to the coast.
What to expect and how to stay safe
If you’re heading to the beach:
- Conditions can change quickly – be ready to leave the water or beach straight away
- Don’t assume the sea is safe, even if it looks calm
- Avoid water activities during unsettled weather
- Choose lifeguarded beaches and stay between the flags
- Go with others and don’t enter the water alone
Even in hot weather, the sea can still be cold. Enter the water slowly to reduce the risk of cold water shock.
If you hear thunder, move to a safe, enclosed shelter (such as a car) and avoid trees or exposed areas.
Planning ahead
- Check travel conditions before you set off
- Secure loose outdoor items like garden furniture or bins
- If you live in a flood-risk area, consider a simple flood plan and emergency kit
- Prepare for possible power cuts by keeping torches and a charged phone to hand
Please keep an eye on the latest forecast, take extra care this evening, and look out for others during this period of heat and storms.
