If you’re heading to Dorset’s beaches, rivers or lakes to cool down during the hot weather, remember that open water can still be dangerous.

Follow these tips to stay safe around water:

  • Check water quality by visiting Swiminfo before heading to a beach, river, or lake
  • Choose lifeguarded beaches whenever possible.
  • Check local weather conditions, tides and water safety advice before swimming.
  • Avoid alcohol before or during water activities, as it can impair judgement and increase risk.
  • Be aware that even in hot weather, open water can be cold enough to cause cold water shock.
  • Never enter the water alone and keep children under close supervision.
  • If you unexpectedly enter cold water, try to relax, float on your back and call for help.
  • If you see someone in difficulty, remember Phone, Float, Throw – call 999, throw something that floats and do not enter the water yourself.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy Dorset’s beautiful coastline and waterways safely this summer.
